Starting to transition means a lot of waiting and worrying; the NHS can't cope with the backlog. Getting private treatment is usually the only option for many now. For Top Surgery, you will need one referral letter; for Bottom Surgery, you will need two.

We do not provide these referrals and rely on you having these from the relevant clinicians.

The therapist is looking to see that you meet the following criteria:

  1. A persistent and well-documented gender dysphoria;
  2. The capacity to make a fully informed decision and to consent to treatment;
  3. That you have reached the age of majority in a given country (if younger, follow the SOC for children and adolescents);
  4. If you are living with any significant physical or mental conditions, then they must be reasonably well-controlled.

Gender Doctors Dr Kirpal Sahota MBChB, CCT, FRCPsych Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist and Gender Specialist. Dr Sahota has full-time appointments at the NHS London Gender Clinic and a small private practice and we aim to keep our waiting times small.
